Tumbledown Bay... BABY SEALS!!

We had been given a tip of a great beach just outside of Akaroa, New Zealand area from another Erskine Fellowship friend living in New Zealand called Tumbledown Bay.  It was a windy and NARROW road to get there, but it was very worth it.  We went to just swim, but got a bigger surprise when we got there.  A wildlife experience we could have never gotten even if we would have paid for it.  It was amazing to be so close and be out on the beach all by ourselves.

As we walked closer to the water, we noticed some baby seals in a tide pool among the rocks as the tide was low.  We were surprised and kept our distance.  We kept seeing more and more seals as we looked up on the rocks and in the tide pools.  There were about 10 babies and at least that many adults/mothers.  The young ones were playing and swimming and the mothers lounged and slept on the rocks and didn't seem to have a care in the world... neither were bothered by our presence.

The baby seals were so cute and furry when they weren't wet.  You can really see their soft fur in the video link below.

We played around the beach and didn't want to get too close for several hours.  As we were going to head back to the car, we decided to go back to the tidal pools and see the seals and see if they were still playing in the pools.  They were still there and we slowly got closer and they seemed so unafraid and curious of the girls.  They got down by the pools and watched the baby seals play and get curiously approach them.  We were amazed when they got closer and closer and approached them as they were on the edge of the pool.

The cute seals would just pose for us   We were amazed at their big black eyes.  They were huge on their cute little faces.

The beach was big and flat and the sand was darker.  It was a beautiful bay, even without the seals.

There were so many muscles attached to the rock along the beach.

One of the tidal pools up in the beach.  It was really up to Ava's waist

We were so excited to have happened upon the seals and that they were curious and friendly.  It was truly a lifetime experience to be this up close and personal. And... we were glad that the mother's were sleeping soundly and weren't bothered by us being there.
