After we came down the other side of Arthur's Pass NP we headed to our hotel (Hostel) in Greymouth and checked in and then headed out again to Paparoa National Park further north and up the coast. We had to see the Pancake Rocks. We had heard about how awesome they were and timed our visit with high tide.
The pancake rocks did not disappoint. These rock formations are named for their stacked pancake look. They line the beach and there are inlets and openings that put on quite a show when the tide is high. It was so loud as the waves crashed up on the rock formations. We loved hearing the roar of the ocean.
There were lots and lots of these plants called New Zealand Flax. It is a tall flat-leafed plant that grows in plenty along this coastline and all down the western coastline. We were on the lookout for this plant when we got here as we have a book at home that mentions it. We had no idea it would be so easy to find, but it is much bigger that we had expected.
As the water shot up and back down I caught a rainbow in the water droplets. It was like a giant bathtub that had access to the ocean from underneath.
We caught a glimpse of a Weka bird along the way. It is a native NZ bird about the size of a chicken. It is a flightless bird.
