The woman at the hostel where we were staying suggested that we travel a little further north of the Pancake Rocks and see the Truman Track (track means trail in NZ). We decided to hit that trail on the way back from seeing the seals so we could be there in the later evening and catch the sunset. It was as spectacular as she had said and we were right on about catching the sunset there. We were amazed at the beauty of the rocks and crashing waves. The sand was coarse like little rocks, but the girls were determined to get their feet wet anyways. The water was pretty cold, but that never stops them. The Truman Track is on the far West Coast of NZ. In the map below you can see how we are across from Christchurch on the opposite coastline.
The trail started out as a very dense rain forest. There was large trees, silver ferns, and moss growing on everything. A true paradise for me. I love the dense green forests and all the shade that the large tree provide. Perfect hiking conditions in my book!! What made it even better was the water we were going to get to see at the end. We could hear the loud waves of the ocean crashing against the shore the closer and closer we got.
We took about 200 pictures here. I included a lot of pictures in this post. We had so much fun there and wanted to capture the wonderful evening we had had so we just keep snapping away. Some of the girls were very tired of us telling them to "smile" and "hold still". Some (Kayla) were more than happy to oblige our picture frenzy and wanted to strike a dance pose every time.
Alyssa found a box in this large tree around the back of it. We went into investigate and opened it up after we suspected it to be a Geocache. We weren't sure that they did that sort of thing here, but that was all we could think that it could possibly be.
When we got to the end of the trail it opened up to a beautiful view of the ocean.
We climbed down the rocks so we could get a better view.... and get their feet in. They were desperate for the ocean on their toes.
Kayla found a spot and wanted all kinds of dance move posses. She so funny.
Alyssa making footprints in the sand.
You can see how coarse the sand is in this picture with Ava....
Brady tried desperately to get as close as possible to the rising waves without getting wet. The waves won.... he got wet.
Kayla and Savannah with their necklaces on that they bought at the Punakaki NP visitor Center.
They spent lots of time rock hunting. We found lots of small round white stones that looked a lot like Jelly Beans.
It as a beautiful sunset.
On our hike back out, Brady found this round hole in the rocks and wanted to get a picture dropping Ava in it. Ha! She was happy to be lowered into a rock hole.
Loved Truman Track!!!
